p. 27-28 Self Defense “There is a celebrated passage by Cicero, in which, speaking of force when used in defense of one’s life, he bears testimony to nature. ‘This law is not written but born in us; we have not learned it from any teaching, from hearing or reading, but have got it from nature herself, imbibed it, put it in words . . . ; a law to effect that if our lives are threatened by plots, violence, or weapons in the hands of robbers or enemies, any means of ensuring our safety is a right.” He proceeds: ‘Reason taught this law to the educated, necessity to the barbarians, habit to the nations, and nature herself to the wild beasts – always to use every possible means of repelling any violence offered to their bodies, their heads or their lives.’”
