Does the "whether intentional or not" apply the the Middle Finger, or the Backlash? The way the sentence is written, it looks to me like it applies the the Backlash.
How can either one happen unintentionally. A middle finger is not an unintentional act, and neither is people's backlash at having received one.

Oh, I accidentally replied that in protest for having been told "fuck you", when I actually mean to say I supported being told that.
