Western North Carolina is destroyed. Hell on earth. I spent last night chainsawing fallen logs on a mountain so people could get in. Before that we were hunting for survivors in (town) and delivering water to the fire department. Got a family out today. Most roads are washed out, almost every bridge is gone, entire towns have been wiped out. Whole towns haven't been contacted yet. Complete lack of support by state of TN and feds.
Wish the national guardsmen were useful. They're sitting around waiting for orders while we actually do things.
We are receiving huge donations and going out with a bigger crew tomorrow.
Other than chainsawing blocked roads, we’re getting water, food, gas, and oxygen in.
Packing nonperishables for people. Lots of pop tarts for calories.
We're getting equipment tomorrow. Going to try to build some bridges that are at least usable by foot. Going overland to get insulin and water purification to people who are unreachable by road.
—reports from a volunteer I know
