Here in Europe, I believe there is an intense underlying (yet largely unspoken) hatred of the U.S. which is based primarily in...ENVY.

Most Europeans enjoy a very high standard of living courtesy of the European welfare state. Cosseted by the security of social Europe, most really have NO IDEA how most Americans live, or how difficult life can be for the ordinary person in the United States. Yet despite their own relative security and wealth, they envy the U.S. upper middle-classes, and project this envy onto the entire country...as they embrace all its worst aspects (consumerism, leftist ideology) whilst rejecting its unique virtues (independence/self-reliance, faith in God, respect for hard work, genuine desire to see others succeed regardless of race/religion/social class).
