Yes I agree, the need for US political power is greater than physical self-preservation, in these people. They don't believe that a nuke can ever touch them, because Russians are weak. LOL at thinking that about a nuclear super-power.

However, the wild card in this game is how the Russians perceive they should react. As it is, Telegram channels are reporting that 5 of the 6 missiles were eliminated by their Air Defense (AD). The sixth one was damaged by AD, and some bits landed on a mayonnaise warehouse, causing a fire. No deaths reported. So, it seems that USA shot their wad, and it all came to nought. Or maybe the Amercans were just 'testing' Russian air-defense. At the moment I feel that a disaster was averted, for now. But officially, the danger of WW3 is much higher. Hopefully Russian people still feel safe, I think so, because the ATACMs are demolished crap now.

Gauging the appropriate response is very complicated, because the reaction from the public factors in greatly. Russians have a functioning Democracy, and such an escalation is not Putin's decision, (even as Ukrainians like to think he is a dictator). Furthermore, Russia is a mostly Christian (also Muslim) nation, so over-reaction in a game of nuke-chicken is considered a bad thing. Notice that civilian life is usually spared, in a Special Military Operation. So does this mean WAR? That is the issue the Russians are struggling with: whether to call this whole thing a War (with another nuclear power) now. Hopefully not yet, given their foresight to provide themselves with functional AD. However, it is a tangible, objective fact that USA is shooting nuke-capable missiles at Russians, in their country. Just reverse that for a minute: What would be your reaction if some merc sheep-dipped Russians were shooting missiles from Mexico, at a military base in Texas?

Nevertheless, if one is too obsequious and hand-wringing in a game of chicken, then the enemy will interpret that as cucking and weakness. So a lot of cockrel posturing has to accompany the dance.

Hence Q's precipice.

The reason why it is a curious game of chicken, is that the chicken survives in this case. So, one has to get comfortable with being an ultimate chicken, and therefore hanging on to one's life. And that, my friend, becomes a spiritual question when taken to a protecting populations, when owning nukes, level.
