Yes, I am seeing a lot of that sort of comment. Many are now calling for a decapitation strike on the Ukrainian leadership, which is outside of Special Military Operation doctrine. The latter prohibits such strikes. So in order to take out Agent Z, they need to first upgrade the SMO to another doctrine that allows decapitation strikes. That means the legislature, and the army, need to formulate what they are going to do (Will Russians declare war? Or is there another label they can conjure up?), and change the profile of the current operation.
There is of course, Trump. But the Russians are not putting much hope in that idea. It's a 'we shall see' moment - the current thought is that Trump is unpredictable. Here is for hope.
But it seems that everyone, especially state dept (i.e. NYT), is playing chicken during this dead period of transition. Will Trump do anything before Jan 20, apart from talking and properly announcing the new positions? I think not, because he likes to play by the rules. Is there a rule whereby an incoming president can 'take the reigns' early? How about Kamala's last venomous strike against Biden - will she try? NO, I think she's proper done. Anyway, this little effort is coming from the State department, not Bai-den.
Hey, apparently Westerners are quite happy with decaptiation strikes, given that assassinations happen all the time. No-one blinked when it was a Palestinian academic, who was negotiating a cease-fire. So that's fine, nothing to see here. It happened in Iran, anyway. /s
