This video will open your eyes about symbolism even though it is speaking about the passage in Jeremiah 10. Yes...symbols are given their meaning by a group of people. We don't have to subscribe to their view of things because basically we can also ascribe our own symbolism to these objects. As a Christian I don't have to accept their purported "symbolism"...it means nothing to me. Think of the rainbow...God created it...not the gays. Hearts and love...God created it not the gods and goddesses. Christmas trees...the moon...the stars...God created it. The winter/summer solstice...God created it. Eggs and bunnies...created by none other than God and whatever someone ascribes to it doesn't take away from the fact that these belong to God. We are free in Christ not to be bound by the dictates of man or satan. Paul talks about this in Corinthians concerning meat sacrificed to idols. It is very freeing to realize the foolishness of people taking what belongs to God and rebranding it to suit their purported views.
