The point is that there were differences between the Ukrainians and the Russians, as well as between the Poles and the Russians (e.g., Taras Bulba). You are talking about a region comparable in size to western Europe, with as many "national" differences. The Russians regard the Ukrainians as "brothers," but they fight them for the sake of their own in the Donbas. In the U.S. Civil War, it was literally true in cases that brother fought against brother over an issue that divided them, with human beings in the outcome. You wouldn't dare say that conflict was unnatural or less strong than ethnic ties.

What difference does it matter if the CIA is not wholly compromised, as long as its minions comply with direction? They are not resisting now; why should they resist at all?
