My theory on why, it has to do with the fact that most of christians today are deceived into believing some form of Futurism / Dispensationalism, which depend on the modern state of Israel, a third temple, and some mysterious future figure called the anti-christ. These people form the majority of Trump's base and so going this route too early could have cost him the election, a 'house divided'...

It could also have to do with Israel having nuclear weapons. How easy would it be for them to smuggle some out to be used against us for not supporting them?
But now the 'world is watching', coming to their own organic conclusions about Israel's actions. Israel has no one to blame for this but themselves.
