I think they're just in the same position that Republicans were in 2008-2016. No charismatic leader. Populace disenchanted with the previous administration. Policies too focused on cultural issues and not economics. We ran two deeply unpopular candidates in a row to massive losses because we didn't have any great options. We only held onto the House bc Americans don't like one party in power.
That's why we're holding onto Trump for dear life. The Q plan could change that, but as long as there are two options some people will move between them when they feel like they aren't being heard or just tired of one. If the GOP gets big enough to where Dems don't matter it will fracture in two and one will just be Dem-lite.

I keep saying this but America isn't built to be a one party country. We should be glad the Dems exist.
