In order to access the hard-to-reach sediments, the team first melted a hole through the 523-metre-thick ice. They then drilled 228 meters further into the bottom of the West Antarctic

Now are they talking the West Antarctic sea? Because if there is free water there then sediments are still being deposited.

If it is not the Sea then as I recall glacier and ice sheets tend to scrape the sediments clean down to bare rock...

So what is going on? Really?
