"HIGHLY PATHOGENIC" For the past few days, this term is being used by everybody in the media and appears everywhere online, but NO DEFINITION is given. How many truly know the definition? Many believe they do and will say that it means "contagious"; they could "catch" whatever it is. It doesn't mean that at all.

Highly Pathogenic refers to something that causes severe impact in a particular species, such as birds, but not necessarily in other species, such as humans. For example, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses can cause severe disease and high mortality in infected poultry, but they don't normally infect humans.

Overall, over 93 million birds have been culled since the "outbreak" began in 2022. It was reported yesterday that more than 4 million chickens in Iowa will have to be culled.

Avian influenza (AI) has been a headline focus since 2004. AI IS NOT A NEW VIRUS. Wild waterfowl are a reservoir for many AI viruses. Yes, it poses a threat, as with ANY pathogen, because it can be spread by inhalation and transmitted like other strains of influenza. The most common way of catching it is through direct contact with infected poultry.

The virus resides and multiplies in the intestines of poultry. Birds, notably wild waterfowl, have the ability to have the virus without being ill, and the virus coexists with these birds without causing illness or harm.

AI is not a major threat to the world. For this virus to become a pandemic, 3 criteria must be met.

  1. The virus must prove that it is highly pathogenic within humans.

  2. The virus must become easily transmissible from person to person (meaning that a shift must take place by mixing the genes from human influenza with an avian strain).

  3. The virus must be novel so that a large portion of the population is susceptible.

To date, there is LITTLE EVIDENCE to suggest that AI can be readily transferred from person to person.

Is there also a need to SLAUGHTER millions of chickens when there is NO PROOF that humans can obtain the virus through eating cooked chickens?
