In jewish tradition, when someone dies, the family covers all the mirrors in the house and friends and other family come to visit while they're in mourning (sometimes for a week). I don't know of any other reason someone would have draped a towel (over something) on the wall. Unless that's a curtain over a window? The top looks too bowed for it to be a curtain over a curtain rod, to my eye. Edit -- photo seems "questionable", to my eye.
