If you look at all of Kubricks movies, they are nearly all virtually the same storyline, using the same central character, and plot line/themes, he basically kept making the same movie!

  • An outsider is allowed into the inner sanctum.
  • A guest. Never a true insider.
  • They have a skill/talent that is useful/or liked.
  • They see too much.
  • They want out.
  • They can't get out.

Kubrick wanted to make a lot of money and he was talented in many respects, he was also NY jew so has that wit and humour.

I read once Kubrick repines to "you can't polish a turd"... was "actually you can if you freeze it"

Stanely Kubrick and David Lynch (Twine Peaks, Dale Cooper) used the same technique. The central character actually represent you the viewer, you are the one wandering around the storyline, finding the clues, discovering a very dark and hidden world slowly being revealed to you. It's very clever device.
