How do you know it's really off?
It's pretty foolproof. You say: "Alexa, are you switched off?" If it is, it says "Yes," in a muffled voice. Never fails.
In Orwell's book, Nineteen Eighty Four, houses were equipped with flat panel "telescreens" that broadcast propaganda all day (MSM?) and they also listened to you and watched you 24/7 (Think Edward Snowdon) in case you did the least slightly subversive thing.
OK, he was off by a few years but that was a pretty good guess right back in 1949 when the book was published.
