It is difficult to say if it actually hit the hard drive. That placement up high is usually not where a hard drive is, but it is where a CD or DVD drive usually is is; especially its form factor and that it would be reachable from outside the machine. (like a CD or DVD drive)
Technology be damned though when you have the police in your pocket and you just need to create a story if need be; something to the effect that our store surveillance footage was destroyed by the gunman.
The whole thing is rotten and implausible.
