We can go back pretty far with the whole "keeping up with the Jones" saying and how society has been programmed to always keep up with each other. We know that many obviously cannot do this, and jealousy arises. Not everyone, but quite a few people become very jealous of what others have, and some will even go to great lengths to getting it...or bring everyone down to their level.

If this means killing someone, or just completely ruining their lives so that they are miserable, they will do it. If they themselves are miserable, they will bring everyone down to their level if they cannot themselves rise up.
