Years ago I went to St. James Cathedral in northwest Spain. It's the endpoint of pilgrimages that come as far as France on foot, there is a path called "el camino" and the tradition spans centuries. There are actually several caminos, but the tradition is on certain Years people walk sometimes for 30 days. There are hostels set up and stuff to make it doable and affordable. People wear out their sneakers and the works.

I went to st James cathedral and ripped off a little piece of granite from one of their walls with my fingernail. It was enough to draw blood and partially detach my nail from my thumb, but I wanted a souvenir, a piece of stone that witnessed centuries of pilgrimage. I chipped away at a structure and while it was a morsel of a stone, had everyone before me done that, the cathedral would be no more.

There is a statue called "santo dos crosques" where you place your hand on one part, and touch forehead with the statue.

There is a multi-inch indentation where millions of people over centuries placed their hand and eroded the stone to the point where now your hand sinks into it.
