It's really really really difficult for a lot of Americans to wrap their heads around the idea that their government is an evil creature that wants to kill us.

I protested bank bailouts in 2008/9, I've been been protesting our loss of civil liberties since about 2009, wrote NONE OF THE ABOVE on my presidential ballot in 2012, voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, remain unvaxxed along with my husband (never even considered it - not no but HELL NO), and have become somewhat politically active (as opposed to sitting on my ass and complaining about the do-nothing Republicans)...

and I STILL HAVE TROUBLE FULLY ACCEPTING THIS.
