I've taken DHEA before, it's a pre-cursor to a bunch of other hormones and generally can make you feel pretty good, I haven't noticed any bad side effects from it or anything. But if you're actually suffering from low-testosterone (hypogonadism) there's really no substitute for testosterone. With hormones in general you can do a lot for yourself by getting in shape and eating right, for lots of people that's enough, but beyond that if you really need (insulin, thyroid, testosterone, etc.) there's no substitute for the hormone itself. It doesn't cost that much to get tested, and if you need it you're much better off with testosterone than "test boosters" from the supplement store.

I had cancer 22 years ago (right after 9/11) and needed thyroid right away, probably should have started testosterone a few years after that. Been on T for the last 5 years and it's had a huge positive impact on my quality of life (for whatever that's worth). I wish I had pushed harder to get tested 10 years earlier. There's nothing wrong with DHEA, it's just not the same thing.
