This happened in the 2020 election as well; notably in Pennsylvania. It actually did a "/W". It went up, down, up, back down, and then up. This was explained by a fact check as a "reporting error." Not that it was an official fact check. I had to dig to find the explanation and it was as hand wavey as it gets.

The problem is the information that was "in error" was the information from the server. So while I agree that the error was reported, it was first a server sending false information and then adjusting it error. This can't happen if your system is designed to count votes. It can only happen if it is sending some other type of numerical information.
