See, this is why I like this board. Similar to the monkeys typing theory eventually one of us will be right. We may not ever know, but one of us will figure it out even if by dumb luck.

If you believe the stuff this press agency put out it says DoD ran it. I don't believe them - never heard of them - but I have no proof either way so I can't discount it as a valid theory anymore than I can discount either one of ours.

I will say though that I spent some time in China in both Shanghai and Xian, and they were some of the most backwards people I've ever seen. One of the monasteries I visited in Xian in the dead of winter had koi ponds with foot-long koi frozen solid where they swam - they didn't even bother to protect them. You would think the monks would do something.

In Shanghai when I would take a break and walk outside (I was working another pen-testing contract) I would stand and watch the high-rise across the street being built. They had workers using bamboo scaffolding, no hard hats, things were being lifted up by sketchy ropes 10-20 stories above while people stood underneath watching, and the moving platforms similar to the things window washers use in NYC would stall halfway up until the guy would use a big wrench and beat on the control box. Again, while people were underneath.

I don't doubt for a minute they could have a leak. It might not come from their scientists who are likely world-renowned and not ass-backwards but the people who built the building, clean it, cook the food, and all the other non-technical stuff are not as accomplished.

I know one time I was doing a pen test on the Mexican government in Mexico City and decided to go see the pyramid on the weekend. On the way there just outside of town I saw a big tent city and asked my driver what it was. He told me a lot of the unskilled or non-technical workers lived there. He said the hotel staff up to the manager lived there, came in to work every day and changed into their uniforms or suits/tuxedos and then did the reverse at the end of the day. I didn't see that in China but things were a little more "controlled" as to what they would let Americans see. I've seen the same types of things in Indonesia and Turkey as well.

With the vast amounts of different experiences we likely all have had I think it makes our information digs that much better. It would be even better if more people would stop lurking and start collaborating though.

Edit: In Mexico I stayed at a 5-star hotel the government put me in, and they provided me with a driver in a secure car 24/7 because they said there had been kidnappings of foreigners. Especially ones like me who would have sensitive info I would have discovered during my pen-test. I didn't want to come off like some elite guy. They wouldn't let me even try to use a taxi. They instructed the driver(s) to take me to/from work and wherever I wanted to go. It was a rather important governmental agency.
