Chernobyl wasn't toxic. It was radioactive particles shot out in every direction, contaminating everything in a massive radius.

Toxicity can be prevented, in many cases filtered out and diluted in the air to harmless PPB. It can also be more readily cleaned up because of that.

There's little that can be done to combat the radioactive mess. Expensive specialized equipment, burying and time -- ignoring the giant creepy mass of radiation that still exists there.

Essentially, you can responsibly evacuate and clean up toxic chemicals and aside from water supplies likely be okay.

The more accurate thing, if this is really the cause (blah blah causality does not blah blah corroboration blah) is that it is once again being covered up by corruption, and that is the main parallel to Chernobyl.

If I were an actual investigative reporter, I would have been swarming this area endlessly from the moment it happened because this was not some every day accidental occurrence.

TL;DR: Evacuation should have happened until it was safe, which shouldn't take that long if they got on top of it to stop it at the source. I'm not clear on if they evacuated as I knew this happened but hadn't tracked, but the evacuation should have lasted longer.
