Hey fren, I know only too well the struggle. Husband is an MD, wanted to do ER but didn’t match and went into Family instead. Everything happens for a reason!!! I thank God we didn’t go ER at this point. He would have been miserable. On the other side, we see how his quality of life would have been in ER and that he is much happier with a lot more options in Family. Also side gigs are available in Family Med and it’s really flexible. You could go inpatient and do hospitalist or outpatient and do clinic. We get mailers for job offers from 300K+ and I’ve seen all the way up to 600K for some rural places. He’s worked in EDs and urgent cares, he’s an awesome doc at whatever he does, but as a family doc you can form relationships with patients and truly help them change their health for the long term. Don’t get me wrong there is a lot of suck, but it’s like that no matter what you choose in medicine. I think family med can really be a gem that most med students overlook, if you can’t find an ED residency or want to try something different.

I know none of this is easy. And if you’ve taken out the loans that’s weighing heavy on you. Modern medicine sucks, however, there are more based people around than you realize once you get out of academia.

We know for sure he would have been expelled from residency for not taking the clot shot, but we got out in 2019 just before the pandemic and he had to apply for exemptions at his current job. They were approved but we were willing to walk if they didn’t.

Since the match was in March, are they requiring proof of vaccination in order to start at your residency that you matched into? Just wondering at what point in the process they’re demanding proof of vax.

If you think you’ll be denied, my advice would be to first look around in the south for programs that didn’t fill. MS, AL, FL, TN, SC. Surely there should be somewhere that would be willing to have you. You may have to get on the phone and start calling around, try to find different program directors. At this point starting a residency somewhere is preferable to having nothing in place, you can always try to maneuver into your next spot.

Also someone mentioned Americas Frontline Doctors. I second that and see if they have any connections to hospitals/residency programs that won’t require the vax.

Edited to add: If you matched the first time around, you may not know this but in the SOAP process we were given a huge packet list of residencies that didn’t fill across the country. The process may be different now bc this was in 2016, but check with your school and ask for the unmatched programs list for SOAP. This is where you’ll potentially find other programs to call and get into.
