Me neither. A drummer I played with kept insisting his brilliance - he wanted me to listen to Joe's Garage. I was like nope too weird.
Well eventually I had one of those "buy 11 pay the price of 1" CD things* and needed a few more (of course I cancelled right away so as to not get sucked in) so in those few I said "what the hell" and got Zappa's "Strictly Commercial" GH collection. It was fun at first in a Dr. D way, and around the time the humor/novelty was wearing off...I started to get hooked musically. I was like wait a minute....
*Also my gateway to Steely Dan - who I Fucking Hated for all my AOR years. I got The Nightfly based on my esteemed guitar teacher's love of the album, so I filled out that 11 discs with this. And I thought it was a good stereo demo disc but not much beyond that for many years. Now they are probably my favorite band tied with the Stones& and just behind The Police.
&I hated them forever too but this guy at my job in SF said get Sticky Fingers. OK fine. It took some gaining traction but I came to realize the Stones at their peak - like Beggars Banquet thru Exile on Main St - is astonishingly brilliant stuff.
