Russia can be best understood as being the opposite military philosophy of Germany.

Germany = aggressive, blitzkreig, decisive knockout battle.

Russia = patient approach, stretch out with the enemy making them fight multiple battles, exhaust their resources, etc.

Both have strengths and weaknesses, I think Germany style probably works best in a small country where you have nowhere to run (and a disaster invading the USSR), Ukraine is kind of in the middle size wise so you can argue either way.
