I love 308. Problem is, most folks run 147-155 m80 ball on the cheap end these days. These can't defeat the multi hit ability of modern level III plastic armor. Granted, you should still be mag dumping a close range target till the threat stops, but 223 will be easier to penetrate after multiple hits than 308. Velocity kills armor and 308 lacks that ability unless you're able to score 30 cal penetrators.
For 223/556, I can assure you that 27 grains of CFE223 behind a Hornady 53gn vmax going 3400 fps defeats any level III. I've tried it. I'm sure similar magic can be had with the 125 gn 308 bullets if u can push them to 3200fps or more. But, since most folks don't reload, m193 5.56 out of a 20" AR is a known armor killer at point blank range.
