I am 71 years old and consciously experienced 1989. We lived in Hanover, Lower Saxony, on the edge of the GDR television reception area. From the summer after the opening of the border fence between Hungary and Austria and the cessation of strict border surveillance by the Hungarian military, I started watching GDR television news regularly in the evenings. The ramping up and later overdoing of propaganda against anti-socialist elements, the concealment of protest actions, the highlighting of regime-supporting measures, the demand for severe punishments for hooligans by "ordinary" people...
What I am experiencing now in the German media is not new to me, I know it! It smells of 1989, but it started much earlier in this year. The political panic is palpable. As in 1989, eight pages of the local newspaper (owned by the SPD) are today devoted to a call for a demonstration against the AfD. They lie about the number of pro- and anti-government participants. Up to now, the ratio of participants was 2:1 and 1:2, but now it is 4:1 and 1:4! (mapchecking.com)
The problem for those in power today is that they don't just have one construction site (AfD), but many! Economic destruction, resulting in growing unemployment; unchecked immigration; war against Russia as a vassal of the USA and unopposed support of the unwinnable Israeli war against all its neighbors; imminent collapse of the financial system and other NSWIC events.
