We know they eventually got too powerful and the Pope or King of France took them out. Of course, we'll probably never know the true history of that time, but I like the idea of the original intent. Protecting the faithful as they make their journey to holy sites. Protecting the faithful so they may worship in peace. We all can be modern day Templars, imho.
