That was just Kubrick's style, he wasn't hitting the audience over the head with the message of his films, which is why he was so great.

He didn't just "happen to be a journalist", That was the story that was written for a reason. The Born to Kill on his helmet, the peace pin on his fatigues, running into his old mates from bootcamp who have now become savages and documenting them, and eventually getting his first kill making the transition from being a spectator into a killer (one of them), played a larger part of the film than you picked up on.

I'd argue that not only is it similar, but I doubt Civil war can come close to accomplishing what FMJ did.

Also not sure if Civil War was shot in a 'fake' documentary style (think spinal tap - fuck Rob Reiner), looks like its just following Journalists making a documentary.
