The fold makes the circle, which coincidently centers it, look marked if the ballot didn't have it circled in. The machine marks it as 6 marked instead of the limit of 5 choices. Only Republican's ballots wouldn't of chosen the dem and 100% chance of being doubled checked. The switching happens right there.
