From what I understand, the White Hat Hackers already had access and are now just releasing everything.

They couldn't release sooner, b/c they needed the WORLD to be watching what's unfolding now.

The Julian Assange part is confusing but heard it was a way to "freakout" a few of them, something along those lines.
