It does look like that, if you've never seen a re-entry of a satellite or in this case, a jet contrail ( under ideal conditions ) near sunrise or sunset.

Refraction in the atmosphere from the Sun being low on the horizon.

It appears headed into the ground because it's going downrange ( towards the visible horizon, which is a mountain range ) and the lens is on zoom.

This is at altitude. Notice the identical pattern and fragmenting contrail due to air diffusion over the wing.
