Ideally, you want a VPN that doesn't log traffic/DNS requests AND doesn't turn in any logging to Law Enforcement Agencies. The most popular ones being hawked by "conservative media", Express and Nord come to mind, are not VPNs I would personally pick. I get the appeal, but cheap is not always good in this case.
Personally, I think I'm going to go with the whole Proton suite, getting their email/VPN package. I've been researching "alternate" email providers to get away from goog/M$, but even going with Proton (highly regarded email service), you're still going to run into problems with financial institutions not accepting their email service because it's associated with "bad actors/criminal activity" - obviously bullshit.
