As a progressive, I have not always had faith in this movement.
posted 5 years ago by RichardLewis 5 years ago by RichardLewis +49 / -0

But here on the brink of the destruction of our country, I have returned.

Throwaway acct, I am not in fact Richard Lewis. Us Reddit Refugees ought to be careful lol.

Know that you have silent supporters like myself wearing liberal clothes in a liberal state.

With all respect - when you define yourself as a progressive, what does that mean to you?

Honestly for me it's about social liberties and healthcare that won't put you in debt. More libertarian leaning if I'm being honest, but I've supported a lot of people that people here typically wouldn't support.

like Bernie, Yang, especially Tulsi Gabbard.

I'm confused. Those are peoples who's policies are largely centered around some kind of government handout.

A government doesn't generate a single cent. They take and redistribute.

Stuff like UBI will require a huge ramp-up of 'take' and I can't see how that is in any way conducive towards libertarian values.

I didn't so much agree with Yang as I did appreciate him as the breath of fresh air on the debate stage, UBI is something of the far future. Healthcare however should be of grave concern to everyone that's not a veteran and doesn't get free insurance through their job.

I get it, there’s plenty to go around. Unfortunately there’s probably no equitable way to get it to the right places because power corrupts, etc.

And to Yang’s credit, he did get on TV and say that the Democrats are the party of the costal elite and that they’ve lost touch with reality. So credit where credit is due.

Psst - healthcare =/= health insurance.

Also, the cost of health care as we know it today is likely grossly inaccurate to the true cost of it (much like a 10 cent plastic mold can be sold for like 60$). Break the monopolies in big pharma, and restructure the government's ties to hospitals, and suddenly you probably won't need universal health insurance, or any of this other nonsense the left tends to push for.

Doesn't answer my core question.

UBI is merely a poster child of examples. Bernie is a self-proclaimed socialist and Tulsi also leans towards bigger government in all her flip-flops (though I admit her flip-flops are far more grounded in reality compared to other Dems). Heathcare is great thing but also another project that requires massive funds.

So again, I can't see how increasing government involvement by creating more justification for bigger 'takes' is conducive to libertarian values in any way.

*just to be clear, I'm not talking in 'right or wrong' basis but in terms of 'conflicting directions'

I understand, but I think this brings up a far larger issue that's ignored by everyone in the media.

We're human, you can't just slap a title on someone and tell them what they believe because of that title. We're multidimensional, we don't have to fit into a certain box.

I don't necessarily believe a socialist healthcare system is the answer, just a healthcare system that doesn't leave patients broke and in debt. Our military budget is ginormous, my taxes and yours pay for it, a lot of these wars we don't need to be in: Syria, Afghanistan.

If I'm going to be paying taxes, which I have to, I would like to get something that benefits me.

Actually, I think a lot of Bernie supporters switched over to Trump - many bc they originally saw Bernie as someone who wanted to get rid of the corruption but then realized that he was corrupt like the rest of them - or at least wouldn't stand up against the corruption - not even when it made him lose his primary.

Tulsi Gabbard has her good points.

Yang is an Omidyar puppet, and I wouldn't trust him with my shoe.

I get the healthcare, but it can't be socialized or we're screwed - they'll force all kinds of stuff on us. What do you mean by social liberties?

I mean people should be able to do what they want. From marriage to drugs to guns.

I personally believe someone's sex preference (as long as its between adults capable of informed consent) is between them and God. However, just as I wouldn't force my heterosexuality in someones face, I don't want someones sexuality thrown in mine, and I certainly don't want my kindergarten-age child being taught to question their gender or my 5th grade child being taught how to have anal sex with a cucumber - because that infringes on my child's right to an "innocent" childhood and my right as a parent to make decisions in the best interests of my children.

I'm okay with legalization of marijuana because it's natural which is more than I can say for alcohol. My problem with legalizing other drugs has more to do with their addictive nature (if heroin was legalized, more people would be willing to try it and, bc it's highly addictive even after one use, more people would end up addicted.) Plus the social cost of addiction.

As far as guns, I disagree with red flag laws and registration - b c, let's face it, most criminals don't have registered guns , and, in most states there are already mental health procedures in place to deal with those who are considered dangerous to themselves or others..

Stuff like this is important to talk about because it seems like a lot of issues have been divisively amplified - esp race and sexuality.

I come from a conservative Republican family, and because of that, have ended up being around a lot of conservatives. I know a few Dems - most of who now support Trump and a couple who don't but can't back that decision up by anything other than the accepted Dem narrative. The irony is that they pretty much want the same things out of life that I do - IMO most Americans are on the same basic page of what we want for our families.

I have been reading a lot of your replies and appreciate your willingness to be "outspoken" towards your progressive view but this response caused me to pause and re-read. What about that above statement do you not agree with with you say you agree with most? Genuinely curious about this due to my profession and the area in which I do it.

Ya so I don't think addictive/dangerous drugs should be readily available for anyone , but the one stipulation in my belief is that I don't believe in repercussions that do not fit the severity or lack thereof of the crime. Basically I want people to be able to bounce back to life after addiction without any extreme damage to their ability to get a job etc.

Please take a look at Thomas Sowell’s “Basic Economics”.

It’s basically economics for dummies and does a fantastic job showing that the free market is pretty much the only way to solve these problems. He cites numerous examples from communist, capitalist, and feudal countries.

Prices in certain sectors are so high specifically because the government gets involved. Healthcare, student loans, housing.

Yes, these problems exist, but Yang and Tulsa’s solutions only exacerbate the problem. They use a smokescreen promising things they can never deliver. Higher taxes only ever lead to more waste and more corruption.

I had the same question... What core values matter most to you? Trump’s movement of taking the government and putting it back in control of the people does not align with the way I understand progressive values. No disrespect intended, but I thought progressive values were supporting larger government with higher taxes.

I believe that even the progressive movement has been hijacked, there's so much crazy shit going on in the left it's disheartening. I know a lot of good people with good intentions that will believe every talking point and goal of the left, but realistically I don't think you can equate pure democrat with progressivism.

I for one find it refreshing that anyone calling themselves a progressive would have a conversation, debate with MAGA folks as opposed to name calling and labeling. That being said, after the hate being thrown at "Trumpers" for 4 years by everyone except other Trumpers, skepticism is warranted.

Man, people are seriously losing it. I honestly feel like most of them are bots, but I know some of them aren't.

It's disheartening, but I think they're so aggressive because they're so convinced they're right (which in their minds, means conservatives must be evil).

r/politics on reddit died YEARS ago, like 7 years ago, at first it was subtle, manipulation of votes...But now the shills are obvious, no discussion without insult, all the same talking points.

For example I was on Reddit yesterday and saw that someone posted a thing about the muslims in camps in China, first time I saw one of those posts because they get removed CONSTANTLY for being "irrelevant".

All of the comments inside were saying how the reports were inaccurate and that people should trust CCP sources instead of this reporter whom they all claimed was right wing/religious fanatic.

Also, the entire russia collusion story was horseshit, the fact that people bought into it so easily and people I KNEW believed it, disappointed me.

Last one: In your opinion, what is the difference between Joe Biden and Donald Trump?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– RichardLewis [S] 3 points 5 years ago +3 / -0

Joe Biden won the primaries because the primaries were yet again rigged. He is an establishment politician who doesn't care about the people. I did not vote for him.

Its obvious to me Trump actually cares about the people and does things more independently than Biden. That peace deal with North Korea would have never happened with a Clinton administration or a Biden one.

Everything I've seen on social media points toward Biden and his administration having complete control over most social media sites like Reddit.

If it wasn't for the massive smear campaign on Trump, I'm curious how many would still hate him.
