They wouldn't have stormed the beach if they knew the Germans were waiting for them. That would be dumb.

Correct. Was there any other beachheads that could have been stormed, that were not being defended? Something to think about.

I had heard that they attacked that beach because it was the least defended part of the Atlantic Wall. There had been some kind of mix up and Rommel had to move some divisions else where. Intel got this and that's why they chose Normandy.
