Pence is scheduled to meet the 10th mountain division on january 17th.

The 10th mountain division is also scheduled to go to D.C.

Many of those soldiers have recently returned from Afghanistan.

After their visit to Fort Drum on Sunday, they will return to Washington, D.C.

Hmm..."they" is somewhat vague. It could be referring to Pence only, though I'm sure if they're coming, it wouldn't be advertised.

I've interpreted "they" as not Pence because it doesn't make sense.

In this article they only mention "pence" and "10th mountain division" so who is "they"?

I guess you are right when you said it wouldn't be advertised.
