- whatever you do, DON’T use the microwaveable bagged popcorn. Yes it’s fast and easy, but it’s got terrible chemicals that are really bad for you and your lungs, also it’s not nearly as good as stove popcorn.
- grab a big pot
- the key to AMAZING popcorn is oil, use whatever you want, my go to is peanut oil, but use a decent amount of it
- you want to make sure at the very least the entire bottom of the pot is coated with oil, I try to aim for 1/3 oil to 2/3 uncooked popcorn kernels.
- pour popcorn kernels until they too fill the bottom of the pot
- turn your stove up to high
- PUT A LID ON THAT POT!!!
- just wait a few minutes until the popping slows significantly, I shake the pot with the lid on it from time to time to avoid hotspots/burning of the popcorn
- if you are making a large amount, take the lid off once you have a couple of inches of popped kernels (this allows the heat to escape)
- put some salt and whatever you else you like on it in terms of seasoning
- enjoy!!
TLDR: stove cook it with a decent amount of oil and it will taste amazing.
MODS STICKY THIS IS NECESSARY FOR JANUARY 19TH
????
Popcorn / corn pop will humble Joe again?
I love using bacon grease. I have so much of it from all that bacon eating so it's nice to have a good use for it. Popcorn salt and/or salt and vinegar are my fave seasonings :)
OMG, I will have to try bacon grease!! that’s genius!
Didn't expect to get this good of cooking advice from here. So obvious and yet I never saw it.
What is that reddit phrase... The real info is always in the comments!
Holy shit you just wrinkled my brain. I have TONS of saved bacon dat I use in everything, never thought to do it with popcorn!
Did you make some!? Trial run for the big day!
100% agree. And if you were a 70's kid (or earlier) this is how we made popcorn (on the stove). I like melted butter (kerrygold preferably) and a little bit of salt. Also, the biggest tooth chipper is popcorn. Because of the unpopped kernels that you're not expecting. Eat popcorn slowly. (it's not as impossible as you think.) Happy almost Popcorn Day!
Thanks for the tip, will remember this.
Always save your bacon grease! You can use it for everything salty! Sautee your cooked potatoes in it , even your bland chicken breast, popcorn! Your imagination is the limit! I even put a little in my frying pan to reheat my leftover pizza! Put a lid on it, and your Pizza is crispy and savory as fresh ones!
This is the type of essential post that we need more of!
Bro I've got the Whirly Pop stove top popcorn maker and bags of Amish white corn kernels. Popped in olive oil topped with garlic salt... Can't beat it!
Olive oil and garlic salt, that sounds so good...

This guy pops corn.
Or if you are in a big hurry, get a lunch bag that's paper cover the bottom of it with popcorn turn it on its side scrunch it at the very end and then microwave for 2 to 3 minutes or until the popping slows down microwave popcorn without all the chemicals
I CANNOT SLEEP THIS SHIT IS SOOOO GOOD
You could also microwave a few spoonfuls of butter in a cup/mug for about 15-30 secs (until melted) and then pour it over the popcorn with the salt.
This is great! It sounds like how my dad used to make it (olive oil popcorn is so good...)
This is how I do it with butter (1 stick for one cup of kernels).
I melt the butter on high with a little bit of salt, then I put in a couple of kernels with the lid on until they pop, then I turn on medium, dump the rest of the measured kernels and shake the pot so their pretty evenly disturbed and covered in butter.
Once the popping slows I take it off and add salt to taste. It's really good and the trick is to not burn the butter too much by putting it on medium, but older electric stoves may need to be hotter so keep an eye on the temp.
My preferred oil is coconut. Takes high heat and I keep the popcorn in the freezer. Makes for bigger explosions when the kernels pop. For an occasional treat I'll throw in a few tablespoons if sugar flavored with vanilla. ?
Coconut oil is what movie theatres use.
pouring a stick of melted butter over it is key
When you've got the lid on and the heat is going. Don't forget to occasionally lift and shake to stop kernels sticking to the bottom of the pot and get other kernels in position to start popping.
Love you! ?
Me likey stove-greasy as well. Sometimes leftover grease from fried chicken too
I heard WarleyPop is the best. I'm getting one this weekend.
Bahahaha ?
