I imagine that algorithm is trying to do something along the lines of cyber-phrenology, and matching your search history with other entries of like minded users.

Google's algorithm uses your past searches. If you use StartPage, your search is aggregated with everyone else in the world using StartPage. StartPage gets results from Google, so your searches there would be buried within the whole world's searches.
