History might be a useful tool here. Saying "I told you so" will not be a good way forward. Admitting to our doubts and fears doesn't hurt either.
Going back to the late 1930's, the attitude in America was isolationism. That was pushed by the Nazis to gain time to overthrow Europe with the intention of creating a Nazi European fortress. But it was also promoted by US politicians and the MSM. Charles Lindbergh was one of the "stars" promoting it.
The depression (I think it was caused by the DS) was still ongoing, and people everywhere were struggling to recover and move forward with their lives. In the US, information was mostly controlled by the media giants in the largest cities, who could afford to send journalists abroad and provide international news. They controlled enough of the flow of information that they didn't have to worry about what they didn't control.
There were also a number of people suggesting the Nazis were showing the way forward in the modern world - providing solutions to civil unrest, social injustice, and economic distress. Sound familiar?
Anyway, the point is, many people have been fooled, and it's nothing new. How can you find truth when you don't have the time, and all the sources you thought you could trust turned out to be corrupt? When the full scale WWII broke out, it cost millions of lives because of the lack of information, and the lack of leadership. This time it was necessary for true leaders to work undercover long enough to successfully launch a military campaign against our enemies.
A few random thoughts....
