get a GMRS radio and find your nearest repeater - then you can stay in contact with folks local

you'll find most of those that get into GMRS radio tend to be decent folk - a lot of them want to go on to take their HAM tech test and become HAM enthusiast

will keep you in a loop at least local goings on
