40 Ex-Australian Army here. Not being funny, but I know the difference between a soldier and something else that happens to be wearing the uniform. Can any vet US members here please explain to me what these uniformed people are ? Thanks. The US military, isn't the Australian Military, you have to remember.
You know how hard it is to get into the Aus Military. It's not the same for the US.
So if you think they look... not right, maybe? Then that could be why.

NG is not the reserves though is it ? Is it something else ?
Are NG units supposed to be combat ready ? Dunno how it works over there.
NG belong to the states so they are not even as trained up as active reserves are. Most of the time the training they do is pretty lax.
NG are known as weekend warriors. They are more of a civilian assistance force than a fighting force.
ETA: They train two weeks a year and one weekend a month.
