Let the debates happen then Trump couldn't have said to go home in peace.... The statement he needed a reason to say to be able to do the ia. So no we would not be in the same place if pence did what you just said.
Plus most people would not have listened to the debates like they never do. They would have waited for the highlights or result nothing more.
It's niave to think everyone would have sat through congress proceedings as they seem to try to make it as mind numbing as possible so no one wants to listen to them. So not many would be awakened by the revelations in that setting.
