It doesn't really mean Q was wrong, it means the plan failed. In WWII the allies tried to defeat Hitler with Market Garden. If your friend told you all about that plan before it happened he wasn't lying to you, it just didn't work. The Allies ended up having to fight on and ultimately beat Hitler a different way.
