Was this "declassified"? This looks like notes from an open Senate Intelligence Committee hearing from 1996. It is telling, however, that the CIA director was seeking to expand its operations into the Peace Corps, and that he believed that in most cases, the President shouldn't even need to review it. Then you have Tom Koppel come on and imply that some members of the media already work for the Agency but that it was better to keep the laws on the books as is so that if a journalist was captured by enemy forces they could always claim American law as a defense if they were suspected of working for intelligence agencies. No telling from that statement just how many journalists in 1996 were already under the CIA's employ.
I wonder how the consequences of these discussions and others lead to our current Mockingbird media apparatus we have today? How far gone was it in 1996? How much further did it deteriorate over the past 24 years?
