But then why does he play along with the DS?

Couldn't he just make a deal with Trump, asking for full protection for him and his son?

If he dies, what are the chances the DS will even bother to protect Hunter?

Biden knows he's in too deep. If he goes to Trump now, the DS kills him, Hunter, and his family. At least if he plays along with the DS, he might be able to survive or 25th Amendment himself and live out the rest of his days in a home somewhere while Kamala fucks the country.
