Two of the country's deepest lakes Seneca (188 meters) and Cayuga (133 meters) are among the 11 Finger Lakes (my, look at all that doubling). Their bottoms are below sea level. Below Cayuga lies the Cargill Lansing salt mine, the deepest such mine in the US. The region is packed with colleges and universities, no doubt hosting academics researching who knows what. Cornell, located in Ithaca, has prominent programs in nuclear engineering, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, the latter housed in the Bill and Melinda Gates Hall of Computer Science.
