If you can watch classic Star Trek episode "Patterns of Force" it explains what we are watching today. It is from season 2 episode 21, the description says the Enterprise is sent to this planet Ekos to look for a missing Federation historian who was once Kirk's professor at the Federation. Anyway this man helps rebuild Ekosian society by using Nazi Germany as its guidebook. Anyway to cut to the chase he ends up being drugged up puppet, propped up behind a curtain.
