That was why the mask thing all round - they were obviously going to parade a ton of "dead because Trump said do not wear a mask" and probably were going to use the "patriots wear masks" line on him as part of it.
So he did the mask thing - we all hated it, but it likely stopped them running a whole circus act they had worked out around masks and patriotism. I think he did take the heat out of it (overall) even though he got a lot of flak.
