Scott is a liberal or moderate Republican.[44] As a candidate and Governor, he is known to "embrace moderate and sometimes even liberal policies";[45] his views can be described as "fiscally conservative but socially liberal".[46] Describing his views, Governor Scott explained: "I am very much a fiscal conservative. But not unlike most Republicans in the Northeast, I'm probably more on the left of center from a social standpoint ... So even if Phil Scott ends up appointing a Senator, the most he would probably do is appoint an independent who ends up caucusing with the Dems.
